Opening of new unit at Hawick

Friday 1st August saw Honorary Provost Stuart Marshall officiate over the opening of a new unit at the Hawick premises of the charity Home Basics at Annfield Mill in Teviot Crescent. Among the many guests were representatives of the housing associations, SBHA, Scottish Borders Council, Waverley, Eildon Housing along with Salvation Army and Fresh Start Selkirk. Other guests included Councillors Watson Macateer, Stuart Bell and Ron Smith and parliamentarians John Lamont and Michael Moore.

The Official Opening heralds a new era for Home Basics (Hawick and Walkerburn) as it coincides with the launch of their own Self-Referral Scheme to replace the discontinued Government scheme. The Home Basics scheme was set up to target and enable people on low pay and those receiving benefits living anywhere in the Borders, to access good, affordable furniture and white goods. While these are the target groups, anyone can shop in Home Basics and all are welcome. Priority for some white goods is given to referrals. Recycling is a major part of the charity’s work and anyone can donate clean, working, reusable items by phoning 01450 363974 or 01896 870455
